Toddler Sleep Struggles

Gentle Sleep Techniques for Toddlers

Sleep is crucial for a toddler’s development, health, and well-being. However, getting a toddler to sleep can be challenging for many parents. Gentle sleep techniques focus on helping toddlers establish healthy sleep habits without resorting to harsh methods like "cry it out." Here are some effective and compassionate strategies to encourage better sleep for your toddler.

1. Establish a Consistent Bedtime Routine

A consistent bedtime routine helps signal to your toddler that it’s time to wind down and prepare for sleep. A typical routine might include:

  • A warm bath

  • Brushing teeth

  • Reading a bedtime story

  • Singing a lullaby

  • Cuddling or gentle rocking

2. Create a Comfortable Sleep Environment

Ensure that your toddler’s sleep environment is conducive to rest:

  • Keep the room dark or use a nightlight if your child prefers.

  • Maintain a comfortable room temperature.

  • Use a white noise machine or soft music to mask household noises.

  • Ensure the crib or bed is safe and comfortable.

3. Follow a Consistent Sleep Schedule

Toddlers thrive on routine, so try to put your child to bed and wake them up at the same times each day. Consistent sleep and wake times help regulate your child’s internal clock, making it easier for them to fall asleep and stay asleep.

4. Offer Comfort and Reassurance

Toddlers may experience separation anxiety, making bedtime difficult. Offer comfort and reassurance to help them feel secure:

  • Stay with them until they fall asleep, gradually reducing your presence over time.

  • Use a transitional object like a favorite stuffed animal or blanket.

  • Respond promptly to nighttime wakings, providing comfort while encouraging them to fall back asleep independently.

5. Encourage CoRegulation

Teaching your toddler to coregulate with you without codependenacy with one way of falling asleep can help them fall asleep on their own and return to sleep if they wake up during the night:

  • Place your child in their crib or bed while they are calm, ready for sleep but still awake and stay with them to soothe to sleep.

  • Offer verbal reassurance and gentle pats, but allow them to settle themselves.

  • Gradually decrease your involvement as they become more comfortable with finding their own calming sensory tool while they borrow your calm from your connected coregulation.

6. Limit Stimulants and Screen Time Before Bed

Stimulants like caffeine and screen time can interfere with your toddler’s ability to fall asleep. Avoid giving your child caffeinated drinks or snacks, and limit screen time at least an hour before bedtime. Instead, engage in calming activities like reading or quiet play.

7. Watch for Signs of Tiredness

Pay attention to your toddler’s natural sleep cues, such as rubbing their eyes, yawning, or becoming cranky. Putting your child to bed when they show signs earlier signs of tiredness can help them fall asleep more easily. Missing these cues can be a recipe for over tired and wired. I go in more depth into this when we work together.

8. Be Patient and Consistent

Consistency is key when implementing gentle sleep techniques. It may take time for your toddler to adjust to new routines and expectations. Be patient and persistent, and celebrate small successes along the way.

9. Address Fears and Nightmares

Toddlers may develop fears or experience nightmares, which can disrupt sleep:

  • Talk to your child about their fears during the day and provide reassurance.

  • Use a red/pink/orange nightlight to help them feel safe and to not mess with their circadian rhythm.

  • Offer comfort and soothing words if they wake up scared. I like a set of repeatable cue words to help them know it’s time for sleep but that you are there and they are safe.
